What are QA outsourcing services?
What are QA outsourcing services?
QA outsourcing services are software testing and quality assurance work delivered by an external team instead of in-house staff. The partner plans tests, runs manual and automated checks, logs defects, and reports on release readiness. You can outsource all of QA or only part of it, such as regression testing or test automation.
Quality assurance (QA) covers more than finding bugs. It includes deciding what to test, writing test cases, checking that fixes hold, and telling the team whether a build is safe to ship. When you outsource QA, those tasks move to people whose full-time job is testing.
There are two common setups:
- Embedded: outsourced testers work inside your sprints, attend standups and use your Jira or GitHub boards.
- Managed: the partner owns the whole QA function, from test strategy to sign-off, and your team receives reports and release recommendations.
Most of our clients start embedded and move to a managed setup once trust is built. If you want the full managed-service view, see our QA as a Service (QAaaS) offering.
When should you outsource QA?
When should you outsource QA?
Outsource QA when testing has become the bottleneck that slows releases or lets defects reach users, and hiring in-house testers would take too long or cost too much. Three signals usually show up first.
- Developers are testing their own code. They miss the same edge cases they missed while writing it, and feature work slows down.
- Bugs are reaching production. Support tickets, app store reviews or client complaints point to issues a structured regression pass would have caught.
- Releases keep slipping. Manual regression takes days, so teams either delay launches or skip checks.
There are also times when outsourcing QA is the wrong move. If your product is a few weeks old and changes every day, a part-time tester inside your team may be enough. If testing requires deep domain judgment that only your staff has, keep that part in-house and outsource the repeatable work around it.
What our QA outsourcing services include
What our QA outsourcing services include
Our outsourced QA team covers the testing types most software products need, from functional checks to performance and security basics. You choose the mix based on your product and risk.
| Service | What it covers | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Functional and regression testing | Checks that features work as specified and that new code didn’t break old features | Every product with regular releases |
| Test automation | Automated UI and API suites that run in your CI/CD pipeline | Teams with long manual regression cycles |
| Mobile app testing | iOS and Android checks across devices, OS versions and network conditions | Consumer and field-service apps |
| API and integration testing | Endpoints, data contracts, error handling and third-party connections | SaaS platforms and integrations |
| Performance testing | Load, stress and endurance tests to find slow points before launch | Products expecting traffic spikes |
| Security testing basics | Common vulnerability checks, access control and input validation tests | Apps handling personal or payment data |
| AI and LLM app testing | Test sets for chatbots and AI features, including hallucination and safety checks | Teams shipping AI features |
If you are building AI features, our guide on testing LLM apps and AI chatbots explains how we plan that work. To see exactly how we run test cycles and write bug reports, read about our outsourced QA testing services.
Engagement models
Which QA outsourcing engagement model fits your team?
The right model depends on how often you release and how stable your scope is. A dedicated team suits continuous delivery. Project-based testing suits a fixed launch. On-demand testing suits teams that only need help around major releases.
| Model | How it works | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated QA team | Named testers and a QA lead work only on your product, billed monthly | You release every sprint and need steady coverage |
| Project-based testing | Fixed scope, timeline and deliverables, such as a pre-launch test cycle | You have a defined launch or a one-time audit |
| On-demand release testing | A pool of testers is booked for regression before each major release | Releases are monthly or less frequent |
Need testers who report directly to your own managers instead? That is closer to staff augmentation. Our IT staff augmentation service covers that setup, including QA engineers you interview and choose.
How onboarding works: the first 30 days
How does QA outsourcing onboarding work?
A well-run QA outsourcing engagement starts with learning your product, not with writing hundreds of test cases. We use a four-week plan so you can see results early and correct direction before the work scales.
- Week 1: Discovery. We get access to staging, your backlog and existing tests. We interview your product owner and lead developer and map the riskiest user flows.
- Week 2: Test strategy. You receive a short test plan: what we’ll test, what we won’t, which areas get automated first, and how defects will be reported.
- Week 3: First test cycle. We run functional and regression checks on the current build and log defects in your tracker with steps, evidence and severity.
- Week 4: Review and adjust. We review defect quality and coverage with you, agree on metrics, and decide the automation backlog for the next quarter.
By the end of the first month you should have a documented test plan, a regression suite for your core flows and a clear picture of product quality.
Have a release coming up? Tell us the date and we’ll tell you what can realistically be tested before it.

Will an outsourced QA team work in our tools?
Yes. Our QA outsourcing services run inside your existing tools and workflows, so your developers don’t have to learn a new system. Defects go straight into your tracker, and automated tests run in your pipeline.
- Tracking and test management: Jira, GitHub Issues, Azure DevOps, TestRail and similar tools.
- Automation frameworks: Playwright, Selenium and Cypress for web; Appium for mobile; Postman and REST-based frameworks for APIs.
- Performance: JMeter and k6.
- CI/CD: GitHub Actions, GitLab CI and Jenkins, with test results posted where your team already looks.
We pick frameworks based on your stack and your team’s skills, so that your developers can maintain the tests later if you ever bring QA in-house. For a closer look at where AI fits in testing today, read our practical guide to AI-driven software testing.
Security, NDAs and test data
Is outsourced QA secure?
Outsourced QA is secure when access, data and ownership are agreed before testing starts. Every engagement of our QA outsourcing services starts with an NDA. We sign it before receiving access and work only in the environments you provide. We also limit each tester’s permissions to what their tasks require.
- Access: individual accounts for each tester, removed when the engagement ends.
- Test data: we test with masked or synthetic data, not real customer records.
- Healthcare products: CloudOryx is not HIPAA certified. For software that handles patient data, we agree your PHI rules in writing and test only with data that contains no real patient information.
- Ownership: test cases, automation code and reports belong to you and stay in your repositories.
Working across Chicago and Islamabad time zones
How do time zones work between Chicago and Islamabad?
Islamabad is 10 hours ahead of Chicago during US daylight saving time and 11 hours ahead in winter. We use that gap on purpose. Your developers push code during the US day, our team tests it overnight, and the results are waiting when your team starts work.
During onboarding we agree a set of overlap hours with you for standups, defect triage and release calls. Your QA lead is the single contact for questions, escalations and scope changes, so nothing gets lost between time zones.
What affects the cost of QA outsourcing services?
What affects the cost of QA outsourcing services?
The cost of QA outsourcing services depends mainly on team size, the skills involved and how long the engagement runs. Automation and performance engineers cost more than manual testers. Long-term dedicated teams usually cost less per hour than short, urgent projects.
| Cost factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Team size and seniority | A QA lead plus two testers costs more than one tester, but covers more releases |
| Manual vs automated testing | Automation costs more up front and saves regression time later |
| Number of platforms | Web, iOS, Android and API each add test scope |
| Release frequency | Weekly releases need more regression cycles than quarterly ones |
| Engagement length | Longer commitments usually lower the monthly rate |
Watch for costs a low quote can hide: paid tool licenses, device lab fees, onboarding charges and minimum commitments. Ask any vendor to list these separately. We give a written estimate after a short scoping call, with tooling and onboarding shown as separate lines.
What a weekly QA report looks like
What does a weekly QA report include?
A useful QA report tells a non-technical manager whether the product is ready to ship. Ours fits on one page and covers the same items every week, so trends are easy to spot.
- Release readiness: a clear go, go with known issues, or no-go recommendation.
- Defects found this week, grouped by severity and feature area.
- Defects reopened after a fix (a signal of rushed fixes).
- Test coverage of critical user flows.
- Automation progress: tests added, pass rate and flaky tests fixed.
- Risks and blockers that need a decision from your team.
Testing has a measurable business impact. A study prepared for the US National Institute of Standards and Technology estimated that inadequate software testing cost the US economy up to $59.5 billion a year. The figure is old, but the principle holds: defects caught before release cost far less than defects found by users.
How to choose a QA outsourcing partner
How do you choose a QA outsourcing company?
Choose a QA outsourcing company by checking how it tests, not only what it charges. Ask to see a sample defect report and test plan. Confirm who owns test assets, and check whether the vendor asks about your highest-risk flows before proposing automation.
For a full weighted scorecard and the red flags to watch for, see our guide to choosing a software QA outsourcing company. Questions worth asking any vendor:
- Who will be my day-to-day contact, and how many projects do they handle?
- Can I see an anonymized defect report and weekly QA report?
- How do you decide what to automate and what to keep manual?
- Who owns the test cases and automation code if we part ways?
- Do you follow a recognized testing approach, such as the ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119 software testing standard, for test design?
- Can we start with a short paid pilot before a long contract?
You can see how we’ve applied this approach for a software client in our Logix9 QA case study, and learn more about our people on the About CloudOryx page.
Get a clear testing plan before you commit to anything. Share your product, release schedule and current QA setup, and we’ll recommend the right model for your team.

Book a Free Consultation01How much does QA outsourcing cost?
QA outsourcing cost depends on team size, the mix of manual and automation skills, the number of platforms, and how long you commit. A single tester on a short project costs far less than a dedicated team covering web, mobile and API. We share a written estimate after a free scoping call, with tools and onboarding listed separately so there are no surprises.
02How fast can an outsourced QA team start?
An outsourced QA team can usually begin discovery as soon as the NDA is signed and access to staging is ready. The exact start date depends on the team size and skills you need. In the first week we learn your product and map risky flows, and testing of your current build typically begins in the second or third week.
03What is the difference between QA outsourcing and staff augmentation?
With QA outsourcing, the partner owns the testing outcome, including the test strategy, test execution and reporting. With staff augmentation, you hire individual QA engineers through a partner, and they take direction from your own managers. Outsourcing suits teams without QA leadership. Augmentation suits teams that already have a QA lead and need more hands.
04Can we outsource only test automation and keep manual testing in-house?
Yes. Many teams keep exploratory and domain-heavy testing in-house and outsource automation. We build the automated regression suite in your repository, connect it to your CI/CD pipeline, and document it so your team can run and extend it. This split often gives the fastest reduction in regression time without changing how your product team works.
05Who owns the test cases and scripts?
You do. Every test case, automation script, test plan and report we create belongs to you and is stored in your tools and repositories from day one. If the engagement ends, nothing has to be handed over or rebuilt. We also leave documentation so another team, in-house or external, can continue the work.
06Do you test healthcare and HIPAA-regulated software?
Yes, we test software used by clinics and medical billing companies. CloudOryx is not HIPAA certified, so we agree your data handling rules in writing before testing starts. We work in environments you control and test only with masked or synthetic data, never real patient records, which keeps protected health information out of the testing process.
07Can we start with a pilot?
Yes. A short pilot is the safest way to judge any QA partner. We can test one product area or one release cycle, deliver the test plan, defect reports and a QA summary, and then let you decide. The pilot shows you how we communicate, how clear our defect reports are, and whether the model fits your team.
